Tatami

Tatami is a material unique to Japan.
Tatami can be traced back to rugs woven with rush in ancient times and took form in the Heian period.
With the Shoin-zukuri style of the Muromachi period, tatami became to be used as flooring for the entire room.

Effects of Tatami

Tatami also has room humidity control function, absorbing moisture at times and releasing it during dry times. This is why tatami keeps rooms cool during the summer and warm during the winter. It’s also healthy to sleep on tatami and it is said to be good for back pain. Tatami also absorbs perspiration during sleep, so it is also good for hygiene.

Kyoto and Edo Tatami

Until Kyoto tatami (Kyoma) was devised in the Momoyama period, there was no standard tatami size. Kyoto tatami measures 190.8cm x 95.4cm and is still widely used in Western Japan, especially in Kyoto. On the other hand, Edo tatami (Edoma) is mainly used in Eastern Japan and measures 176cm x88cm, slightly smaller than Kyoto tatami.
