Honing Tradition

Born in Kyoto, June 6, 1973. After working at Sato Sakan Industry, established Tanaka Akiyoshi Sakan Co.

Plastering is working with mud. There are many ancient buildings that remain in the world, each uses mud that corresponds to the local region and climate. If we plaster artisans really want to preserve tradition, it’s not about making walls to be exhibited in museums, but evolving to make work that is embedded in life according to the needs of the region and times.

Kyoto is like a treasury of history and culture, a city made up of both traditional and cutting edge industries. Being born and raised in Kyoto, I wish to carefully preserve Kyokabe walls continued from my ancestors to the next generation. With that in mind, I carefully select traditional materials and techniques while working on location. I want to continue plaster walling and its techniques as an essential part of people’s living environments, embedded in life. With that in mind, I make work as “Kyo-kote-kabe”.
