Spinning Tradition

Born in Kyoto, August 16, 1965. After working in a travel agency, studied tatami making and continued the family’s tatami business, Motoyama Tatami Store.

Tatami is a material unique to Japan. Tatami can be traced back to rugs woven with rush in ancient times and took form in the Heian period. With the Shoin-zukuri style of the Muromachi period, tatami became to be used as flooring for the entire room. Tatami purifies the air. It also has room humidity control function, absorbing moisture at times and releasing it during dry times. When mats get old, you can replace them, so you can use the foundation many times over. With quality tatami, you can use them for over 100 years, and there are even 400 year old tatami mats at Daitoku-ji Temple.

In this way, tatami is an excellent form of flooring of Japan. With proper knowledge and technique of tatami culture, which has been passed down continuously since ancient times, I hope costumers outside of Kyoto and around the world will know more about this tradition.
