Inheriting Tradition

Born in Kyoto, February 2, 1977. Entered Seikodo Nakajima in 1998, currently company director.

The work of paper mounters mainly deals with decorations in Japanese architecture such as mounting hanging scrolls, Japanese sliding doors, and sliding screens. Although there are many people who have never heard of this profession, I was raised watching my grandfather’s work and touching it. My grandfather always said, “No matter how long you do this work, it never ends. Since the work you get from clients, there is only one of it in the world, it’s such a blessing to be able to constantly work with concentration.” Wanting to be closer to my grandfather whom I respected and wanting to be a mounter just like him or to transcend him, I continued the mounting business.

Various traditional industry techniques are being continued on, so I too wanted to cross the bridge and do my part. In recent years, I finally could understand part of what my grandfather said. In order to establish my own way of mounting, it is necessary to properly continue techniques that have been handed down, listening to clients, feel spaces, and do work putting the spirit of hospitality and feelings and considering how to make clients happy. While traditional Japanese spaces are disappearing, I want to give my all to conveying the beauty of mounting and provide a form of mounting that matches contemporary life.
