SANO, FUMIHIKO

Questioning Tradition

Born in 1981, Nara prefecture. Entered Nakamura Sotoji Komuten as a sukiya carpenter apprentice.
After working at design offices, established Sano Fumihiko studio PHENOMENON.

Although I’m currently active as an architect and artist, in the past I worked as a sukiya carpenter, specializing in tea rooms, ryotei restaurants, cultural properties, guest houses, etc…

Sukiya differs from temples/shrines in that it uses various materials. It combines various unique materials, mainly logs with bark, bamboo, hinoki cypress, Japanese cedar, pine, Japanese chestnut, Japanese hemlock, among others. Each material has its own characteristic, and no two materials are exactly the same. Each has its own best way to show its elements ― the wood grain, touch to the hand, touch to the feet, and smell. No matter expensive or cheap, it’s about bringing out the best of technique and material. It’s about incorporating the culture nurtured by the surroundings into a design context.

I make work while trying to protect the wonderful tradition of Japan that is vanishing with the times and aim to update the culture our ancestors created for the future.
